Pollinator Zones

The Pollinator Zone program encourages landowners and stewards to help convert inactive land to productive, pollinator-friendly habitat.

What is a Pollinator Zone:

Prairie’s once dominated 85% of the Iowa landscape but today only 1/10 of 1% of this prairie remains. Iowa was once home to an amazing array of animal species and provided habitat to a diverse mix of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. Pollinator Zones have been developed to help restore the habitat for these animals.

In addition to increasing the pollinator population, these Pollinator Zones are more cost-effective to maintain, prevent water runoff and erosion; and retain carbon. Pollinator Zones consist of a special mix of 52 different types of native flowers and grasses specially formulated for Black Hawk County to attract pollinators and bloom for the entire season.
